Following on the heels of her romantic doc dramedy Symptoms of a Heartbreak — which earned raves from People, Entertainment Weekly and NPR, amongst others — CAKE Literary co-founder Sona Charaipotra has sold her next YA contemporary, How Maya Got Fierce, to Erin Stein and Weslie Turner at Imprint/Macmillan, set to publish in Spring 2021. Victoria Marini did the deal on behalf of CAKE Literary.
Pitched as The Bold Type meets Younger (with a fun dash of Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead for good measure), the book centers on 17-year-old California farm girl Maya Malhotra, who finds herself scoring a coveted gig as assistant editor at her all-time favorite women’s magazine. The only problem? They think she’s 26. And if her parents find out, they just might disown her.
